Web browsers

A web browser is the program you are using right now to read this page.

You can download several different browsers from the student server, see the software page for instructions.

It is recommended to test your website in several different browsers.

Netscape

This was the first popular web browser. You can download it from www.netscape.com. The latest version complies to all standards.

MS Internet Explorer

This is currently the most used web browser. You can download it from www.microsoft.com, but it is extemely big. Not quite as standards-compliant as Netscape and Opera.

Opera

This browser takes much less space on your hard disk, but still supports all the latest standards. You can download it from www.opera.com.

Amaya

This browser and HTML editor is published by the official World Wide Web Consortium. It is currently the only browser and HTML editor that supports MathML, the new standard for writing mathematical formulas. You can download Amaya from www.w3.org/Amaya.

Lynx

This is the most primitive browser in the world. No graphics and no mouse. If your pages work in Lynx, then they work in all browsers. Lynx is called from the Unix command line with the command:
lynx http://www.whatever.com
